Hoping to sustain the huge momentum built by their sweep of the White Sox, the Twins were looking to get closer to the postseason in their final series of the season against the Royals. Unfortunately, the Royals had other ideas and the Twins dropped the opener 8-1.
The Twins could not seem to solve the Royals pitchers, with their only run coming in the 6th. On the other side, Francisco Liriano struggled over his 4 2/3 innings. While he did get out of a bases loaded situation in the 2nd, he ran into more trouble in the 3rd, when he gave up 3 runs without getting an out. He would give up 4 runs total in the inning. Liriano was pulled in the 5th after giving up a 2 run homer to Billy Butler.
It was most certainly not the kind of start Liriano, one of Minnesota’s best pitchers lately, wanted to have at this point. The good news is that the White Sox lost as well, so the Twins are still a half game ahead of them. However, they cannot depend on that to happen again as they must try and win the final two games.
