Another late inning comeback didn’t quite work out as the Twins fell to the Blue Jays 6-5. It was a game highlighted by a busy 1st inning that some big hits and even bigger home runs. However, the Twins hitters could not quite make up for the mistakes of the rotation yet again.
Down 4-0 after the top of the 1st, the Twins did not give up as they scored 3 runs in their frame, including a 2 run blast from Justin Morneau. Jason Kubel helped with pair of RBI doubles and Delmon Young had 2 hits. Down 6-4 in the 8th, they scored a run to get closer, but that was all they could muster as they were shut down the rest of the way by the Toronto bullpen.
Boof Bonser had yet another horrible outing. He allowed a 1st inning grand slam to Matt Stairs and another run in the 4th. He could just not keep runners off the bases as he fell to a 2-5 record with an ERA of 5.37. The bullpen did the job of keeping the team in the game, allowing only an unearned run in the 8th.
Bonser has just not been getting it done. He had a few starts at the beginning of the season, but has tailed off recently. The trend seems to be 1st inning trouble, as the last few starts he has dug himself into a hole straight from the get go. The obvious thing he needs to work on is starting off well, getting 1st pitch strikes and trying not to give opposing hitters any good pitches. The Twins need Bonser to improve and help their already shaky rotation.
