It was the 1st game in a long road trip for the Twins that would help determine if the team was going to the postseason. Well they got the 2-1 win over the Angels in dramatic fashion, getting the winning run in the 12th inning.
It was a pitcher’s duel for most of the game as neither team had much offense. The Twins finally broke through in the 5th, when Carlos Gomez had an RBI single. Then came the 12th inning. Nick Punto started it with a triple and then scored the eventual winning run on a Denard Span single. Starter Scott Baker gave up a 1st inning solo home run, but otherwise was stellar, shutting down the Angels offense in the rest of his 8 innings. He was helped by a strong bullpen.
This was a huge win against probably the best team in the AL as the Twins try to convince everyone that they are a legitimate postseason threat. A win to start off the road trip would have been great, but such a dramatic one in extra innings is even more of a boost. Now they will look for more victories against the Angels in the rest of the series.
