Twins sweep doubleheader

by @ 9:51 pm. Filed under 2008 Twins

Ready to start their road trip, the Twins had to wait because of a rainout on Friday. That necessitated playing a doubleheader today in Baltimore. Perhaps the team should play more of them as they pulled off a pair of 12 run wins, beating the Os 12-2 in the 1st game and then 12-6 in the 2nd.

In the 1st game, the Twins started their run scoring at a trickle with one run in the 1st, then piled on 3 runs each in the 3rd and 7th, then poured on the offense in the 9th with Denard Span’s 3 run homer, his 2nd of the game, and a 2 run double by Carlos Gomez. Justin Morneau and Brian Bushcer also chipped in RBIs for the game. Scott Baker got into trouble in the 1st, but managed to get out of it, having allowed only 1 run. However, in the rest of his 6 innings he was practically lights out. It didn’t hurt that he had a nice run cushion too.

The Twins started the 2nd game of the doubleheader the way they ended the 1st. They scored 6 runs in the 1st and chased Os starter Garrett Olson after only 2/3 of an inning. By the end of the 4th they had tacked on 5 more runs to put the game out of reach. Glen Perkins was handed a 6 run lead before he even threw a pitch, but he struggled, giving up 6 runs over 3 innings as the Os tried their best to come back.

With the end of the season getting ever closer, the Twins are trying their best to extend it. The offensive outburst during today’s doubleheader is something that could set a tone as the team will need to score lots of runs if they hope to stay in the race. With both wins the Twins now move into a tie with the White Sox for the AL Central.
